Justification of Idea Presentation

Initial Ideas.

Idea 1- Magazine- (The National Geographic Style) Abu Dhabi wildlife.

The target audience of this idea would be an older audience that enjoys wildlife watching and nature magazines. This is because I believe that it will be more successful, however, I would have to research this and find evidence to support it. The content of the magazine will have aspects of wildlife throughout Abu Dhabi, such as emirates park zoo, Sir Bani Yas and a bird watching sanctuary. This is because I want a wide range of animals and information to entertain and inform my audience. To widen my target market I will be focusing on my photography skills with only a small amount of information. The layout of the magazine will be the front cover of a single image, with potential article headings, including the main article. I will include a double page spread which will be the main article with one or two single pages with other articles. This magazine idea with be heavily based on the national geographic magazine, because of the success that it has gained. I also would like to experiment with animal photography.

Idea 2- Documentary A day in the life of a coral reef.

The target audience for this idea is people who enjoy or are interested in scuba diving, snorkeling and underwater wildlife; or programs which are similar. The storyline for the documentary would be a simple swim through with a voice over of information on the different species and plant life. The documentary would be sped up to accommodate day and night life of the corals, with the possibility of have the bio-luminescence of the corals at night. This idea is very much based on the style of the David Attenborough/BBC oceans documentaries. The layout of the documentary would begin with the start of the day through to the end (24hour period). This documentary could be played on nature channels, information centers, dive resorts or hotels. Idea 3- Newspaper supplement. Holiday and dive destination reviews. The target audience for this idea is people that would read newspapers such as The Sun or The Times as these have relaxed topics. My target audience would be families or couples that are looking for cheap bargain holidays or just nice travel destinations. The content of this magazine would be hotels that have offers but also have a dive center or resort attached to them or one nearby, where hotel guest could have special offers or discounts. Each of the hotels that are featured would be of a particular theme such as family holidays in the sun or romantic getaways. The layout would include a couple of establishing shots of the facilities of both the hotel and dive center, with a review and a comparison section. This would relatively short with 2 double page spreads and a few single pages plus the front cover.

Idea 4- Music video/documentary.

The target audience for this idea will be secondary school student, mainly GCSE and A-level students, which are interested in music, film making or bands. The storyline for this would be an original songs performed by a chosen band with an interview of the band members. The interview side of the documentary will a mixture of fan questions and informative questions about how life is like being in a band and trying to set up a band. The layout of this idea would be into parts first the music video filmed and edited then have the interview with the band members, and the in the back ground have the some of the songs playing. Eventually this could be a series going from school to school interviewing and filming videos of school formed bands.

Idea 5- Internet series/film. Educational Internet series

The target audience for this idea would be young children in either reception or foundation stage 1&2 and the teachers that look after these year groups. The content of the film would be life in the early years of primary school and how to survive. The mini lessons that the children could watch and learn about topics such as shapes, numbers and the alphabet, sharing and caring, manners, and the rules of a classroom. The layout of this idea would roughly 10-15mins long, with bright colours and simple language. This film idea has the opportunity of becoming a regular show that the children watch at the beginning of a lesson and would coincide with the curriculum.

Product.

I am going to be producing a wildlife magazine called ‘Abu Dhabi Wildlife’ it would be aimed at the older generation of people living, retiring or visiting Abu Dhabi. The primary target audience ranges from 40-75+, with both a male and female audience. It would also have the possibility for a younger audience.

My Magazine idea will be different from the traditional wildlife or nature magazine as, I will include extras such as photography tips and reviews of wildlife sanctuaries. To make sure I can reach a wider secondary audience.

I will include, photography elements, interviews with staff, events, informative tips and suggestions.

I will focus the magazine around land animals in zoo's and nature reserves, with a small underwater element. This way I can try to please as many people as possible.

I will charge around £3.50 for my magazine as primary research has shown me what people are willing to pay for a magazine. I will also make money from advertisements, this way I will be able to cover my production costs.

Target Market Profile.

My Primary target audience would be the retired or the elderly of Abu Dhabi.

However, there is a secondary target audience which would be the photography or nature enthusiast.

They would be the type of person would take nature walks, visit the zoo with younger family members, interested in the planet and it a photographer of sorts.

They would enjoy nature watching and learning about the animals. They would also have a interest or passion about go green and helping the environment campaigns.

They would enjoy taking part in clean ups and would be interested in when the next one would be.

The audience want to know information about there favourite animals and how they are being treated. So would be interested in interviews with the zoo and sanctuary staff.

The Competition.

My Competition for this idea is both direct and indirect this is because I will be mixing several genres in to one magazine.

The direct competitors are Wildlife or Nature Magazine as this will be the main theme of my idea.

The Wildlife or nature magazines I will be competing with are National Wildlife magazine which is related to the National Wildlife Federation which is based in America and Wildlife magazine, which a BBC magazine. There is also the possibility of the competition is also Nature Photographer.

Nature photographer is the main competitor as it is not limited to one country and the photographs that are featured are from all over the world. It focuses on animals, landscapes, plants, scenes and underwater elements. This could be a problem for me as my idea only focuses on animal photography. As well as a magazine it also has a blog and website when it showcasing the photos. Nature photographer magazine is more expensive then my proposed idea this works in my favour as I will be offering more then just photos and how to take them.

Photography magazines that offer tips and suggestions are also a form competition for this idea as I am hoping to include photography tips and where to purchase cameras, lens and gadgets, in the UAE. I am also hoping to include dates and venues of go green and helping the environment campaigns.

Funding.

The funding for my idea will have to come from a bank loan. This is because it will cover transport fees, printing and distribution costs. I have looked into the following banks for loans and what interest rates they have:

Barclay's: (Personal Loan) They have a representative APR is 5.9% on loans of £7,500 to £15,000 for terms between 2 and 5 years. Get the same rate no matter what you’re borrowing for. Price guarantee: if you find a like-for-like loan with lower monthly repayments, we'll match it and give you £50.

Nationwide:(Personal Loan) Just 4.2% APR representative (fixed) on loans from £7,500 to £14,999 for up to 5 years for our main current account customers. Borrow between £1,000 to £25,000 over 1-7 years. They won't charge you any fees for setting up your Personal Loan.

HSBC: (Personal Loan) Their customers can receive a representative of3.9% APR for Personal Loans between £7,000 and £15,000.

Lloyd's: (Personal Loan) Their Flexible Loan covers a wide range of borrowing options - £1,000 to £25,000, with 1-7 years to repay. The Personal loan includes: Instant money in your account, A personalised quote with no credit footprint, Great flexibility, with the option to overpay or even take a loan repayment holiday, View your balance in Internet Banking, No charge to pay off your loan early. Their loans are available to Lloyd's Bank current account holders who have had their account for more than 3 months.

Nat West: (Personal Loan) The Example of a personal Bank loan is that you can borrow £7,500.00 over 5 years with the representative  4.9% APR. The interest rate is fixed at 4.90% pa. It will cost £140.81 per month and the total amount payable is £8,448.60

Will it Succeed.

I believe my magazine idea will succeed as it combines, nature, wildlife, photography and reviews into one magazine, which therefore fulfils a gap in the UAE market as well as worldwide.

To my knowledge there is no magazine that mixes all of the codes and conventions of all the topics into one magazine.

During the research stage in to my idea, I decided to market my idea in the middle of all my competitor's magazines. This meant that I came to the conclusion that my magazine will be priced at £3.50 (20aed). As I have decided to price my idea in the middle of the existing market I can see if the more neutral price attracts an audience. The first year of sales will be able to tell me if this is successful.

As my product isn't as expensive as some of the top rival magazines, it will make it more appealing to people who are on a pension or don't have a lot of money coming in each week/month.

If my idea isn't successful, there is room for an expansion in to other natural elements, and can be modified into a travel nature magazine. this means that it could feature wildlife in different countries, in different editions.

Creative Plan.

For my photographs throughout the magazine I will hopefully using a mixture of black and white and colour pictures; where appropriate. This is because they both look effective and the black and white photos make scenes look dramatic. The contrast of a black and white photos on a coloured background, will give my magazine a edgy look, which will hopefully attract readers to it as it going against the codes and conventions of a wildlife/nature magazine.

The front cover of my magazine will follow the codes and conventions of most wildlife magazines and have one photograph that covers the whole page, and the colour scheme will reflect the colours of the animal(s) used.

Also on the front cover there will be relatively little writing as I have found out from my research that it is the animal itself that attracts the reader not loads of writing. I also want to show off my photography skills and not have the photo covered in writing.

Technology.

For all of my pictures throughout the magazine I will be using my Nikon DSLR camera for several reasons, such as my pictures will come out looking professional and off a good quality, I have lots of experience using it and have researched into different exposures and lighting.

During the editing process on Adobe Photoshop, my pictures will be cropped to make sure they fit on the page and to cut out any unnecessary background and to make sure that the audience focuses on the model or animal.

I will also edit my photos slightly, in order to make them professional, clearer and brighter. However, I won't be using Photoshop to make my picture unrealistic and aspiration, as I want to be true and honest to my target audience. I also want my audience to be able to take the same pictures that I do.

Justification Of ideas

Justification of my Initial Ideas

Initial Idea 1-Wildlife magazine.

  • Technology
The technology I would need to create a wildlife magazine includes a camera to take the photos for the content, software for editing the photos and to create fonts, banners and backgrounds. This software is adobe Photoshop and fireworks.I already own a DSLR camera which takes high quality photos at no extra over all cost.

  • Challenge?
I have already made a magazine for my AS project, it shouldn't be too much of a challenge. However, I haven't made a wildlife magazine before, so I am not too familiar with the codes and conventions as they will be massively different. Which means that the research will be different and challenging.
  • Summary
I think that a wildlife magazine will be a good idea; as I already have experience with creating a magazine which means I have a starting point of what not to do and what works well. It will still be challenging as the codes and conventions are different and that it will require a lot more travelling then finding opportunity models. I don't read a lot of magazine which puts me at a slight disadvantage, however through audience research I will be able to find out what should be included.

Initial Idea 2- A day in the life of a coral reef
  • Technology
The technology used to make a day in the life video is a DSLR camera with an underwater housing, strobe lights for the day time and night time filming has extra equipment such as extra lighting and a yellow lens filter to pick up the bio luminescence of the coral. I will also need the software to edit and compile all the footage.
  • Challenge?
This idea will be a massive challenge for me as I haven't had much experience filming underwater. It is also very different from anything I have created before. This idea means that I can expand my skills in media and scuba diving. There is also the challenge of hiring camera men to help with filming.
  • Summary
I think that this would be a very interesting idea to create as I think that there is a potential target audience. This is due to there being a gap in the market. I think that it will be a good way to promote diving in the UAE and the need for protection of the reef. It will also be an expensive production with all of the equipment and the amount underwater time.

Initial Idea 3- Newspaper Supplement
  • Technology
The technology used to make a newspaper supplement is very similar to a magazine as I will be using a DSLR camera to take photos for the content and front cover. I will also need software for putting the newspaper together and editing the photos. I already have the camera and the most of the software, which means I can lower the final cost. The software that I don't have I can download for free.
  • Challenge?
This idea will be a massive challenge for me as I haven't had much experience creating a newspaper supplement. This means that I will have to do extra research to find out how newspaper supplement works, printed and what to include. It is also very different from anything I have created before. This idea means that I can expand my skills in media. There is also the challenge of finding a target audience for both the newspaper and the supplement.
  • Summary
I think that this would be a very interesting idea to create as I think that there is a potential target audience. Even though there is already quite alot of holiday destination magazines with the different reviews. However, I can put my own personal spin on it with the element of scuba diving and dive site reviews.

Initial Idea 4- Music Video/ Documentary
  • Technology
The technology I will need for this will be a video camera, lights and microphone, I might need a still camera to take pictures of the band to have in the background. I will also need software for compiling all of my footage and editing the still photos.

  • Challenge?
This idea is going to challenging as I haven't had any experience in filming and music video with a interview of the band mixed in. It is going to be a challenge to have a balance between to music video and the interviews. This idea means that I will have to get permissions for filming and extra camera men to help with filming.
  • Summary
The Summary of this idea is that I will need lots of expensive equipment to make it look professional and interesting. This means that the overall cost will be expensive. I also don't think that there is much of a gap in the market as most people just listen to the music and are not really interested in the band itself, let alone a school band.

Initial Idea 5- Educational series
  • Technology
The technology I will need for this will a HD camera for recording and maybe a screen recorder as I will be using an interactive whiteboard as an educational aid. Once all the filming is complete I will need editing software for compiling all the footage and editing out mistakes.
  • Challenge?
I think that this will be a challenge as I would want to include some children in the episode as it will be something for the audience to relate to. This means that I will have to get the relevant permissions. It is also going to be a challenge for me as I haven't created anything like this before so I am not familiar with the codes and conventions.
  • Summary
The summary of this idea is that it will be an educational series for small children in foundation stage 1 & 2 with the possibility of older years if it is successful. The topics of the episodes with going along with the curriculum that the teacher have set in place. I think it will be successful as there is a large potential audience as it will be useful for both teachers and students.

Content analysis- Sesame Street

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc0UhOnxsow

LANGUAGE.

Cinematography- The episode has a range of shots in different sizes. The show starts with an establishing shot of the main character who is a little boy with a fish bowl on his head; walking to the rocket. The rest of the episode is a mixture of mid shots and close ups as the character flies past the different letters of the alphabet. The show also has some two shot in the second half of the episode when the boy meets up with the aliens. The alphabet episode has a lot of moving wide shots. At the end of episode when the song finishes in the background there is stars which is actually the letter of alphabet. The point of view of the shots are from the audience watching. The angle of the shots are very neutral which means that all types of children can relate and identify with. The camera movement is very steady which connotes that is reliable for children and they can watch an episode on a regular basis. The camera movement is very steady even though we are following an astronaut in space. the framing of the episode is an open frame as it is always moving. As the audience travels through space the different letters or characters are in focus to draw the attention of the audience, however when the spaceship is flying and there is nothing else then the ship in focus.

Mise-en-Scene- The setting of the program starts off on earth then after the count down launches into space. The program has a very short time period as it difficult to maintain the attention span of a small children. This is because the average attention span of a 3 year old is around 6 minutes; this means that a small child can watch a few of these mini lessons before they get bored or interested in something else. The symbolism in the short episode is very important as all of the characters look like they have just come out of a child's imagination; the character is a stereotypical representation of astronaut. The means that the child can easily relate the character. The atmosphere of the program is adventurous and happy, which in turn gives an emotional response of excitement. Body language in children's programs is very important as children are very impressionable. The body language overall is very innocent as the character is always looking straight ahead not really focusing on or looking  at anything in particular. The body language of the other characters or aliens is like they are looking up to the little boy as a role model; they also follows where the letters pop up or where the character is going next. The character first sing the alphabet by himself then as the song instructs 'next time won't you sing with me' he sings it with his alien friends. This connotes an alliance of friendship and sharing. It is obvious that the centre of attention is the little boy as he is the one travelling through space singing  the alphabet. The music that is played throughout the episode is very up beat and has a catchy tune which is great for young children and maintaining the attention span.

AUDIENCE.

Sesame Street has a direct and indirect audience this is because like most children's programs it needs to appeal to an adult audience. This is done by hidden jokes and sayings that children won't understand. The demographic audience for this program is 3-6 year old. This is because the format of the show is teaching young children important lesson such as the alphabet and counting. The show appealing to both a male and female audience. As there are both male and female elements in the episodes. The social class for sesame street is ABC1. The Psychographic audience is The Aspirer, The Mainstream and The Struggler; this is due to the fact that it caters to everyone's needs by having lessons on every thing. The audience readings for this program is a dominant reading as the audience should understand and agree with the different meanings of the episodes. The audience theory is the Hypodermic needle this is because the audience is brainwashed into learning basic lessons through cartoons and music.

VALUES AND IDEOLOGY.

The messages that the producers of sesame street are trying to convey to the audience are that learning can be fun. This because sesame street is all about making learning attractive to young children. Which can be difficult as the average attention span of a 3 year old is around 6 minutes. And that learning the important basic lessons can be portrayed in a fun and cartoon way. This is because children respond better to their favourite characters and similar characters better then adults in TV programs. Another message is that because the short clip is set in outer space it could be a indirect message to young children as it is teaching them to aim high and be the best that they can be. the last message is that children show follow their dreams, no matter how big or out of reach they are.

REPRESENTATION.

The representation of Sesame Street: Outer Space ABC's is an educational program from small children. It is was produced by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett. The subject that is being represented in this episode is young boys as this is the basis of the character. However, there is a secondary representation of girls this is because astronauts aren't gender specific. Small boys and girls are represented through the main character as if you ask a young child around the age 4 or 5 what they want to be when they are older, the answers range from superheroes to fire fighters to princesses to astronauts. This is due to the brainwashing from children programs. The representation of race is Caucasian or western as there isn't coloured character. on the other hand though a lot of the other sesame street episodes have a massive range of races. The age that is primarily represented is 3-6 years old as this is around the age of the man character; the topic that is portray is the alphabet which also makes the age range 3-6years.

INSTITUTION.

Sesame Street is a long-running American children's show created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett. The program is known for its educational content, and images communicated through the use of Jim Henson's Muppet's, animation, short films, humour, and cultural references. The series premiered on November 10, 1969 to positive reviews, some controversy, and high ratings
Joan Ganz Cooney (born Joan Ganz; November 30, 1929) is an American television producer. She is one of the founders of the Children's Televisions Network (CTW), the organisation famous for the creation of the children's television show Sesame  Street which was also co-created by her.
Cooney grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and earned a B.A. degree in education from the University of Arizona in 1951. After working for the State Department in Washington, D.C. and as a journalist in Phoenix, she worked as a publicist for television and production companies in New York City. In 1961, she became interested in working for educational television, and became a documentary producer for New York's first educational TV station WNET (Channel 13). Many of the programs she produced won local Emmys.
Lloyd Newton Morrisett, Jr (born November 2, 1929) is an American experimental psychologist with a career in education, communications, and philanthropy. He is one of the founders of the Sesame workshop, the organisation famous for the creation of the children's television shows Sesame Street which was also co-created by him, The Electric Company, and many others.

NARRATIVE.

The narritive conventions of Sesame Street include Genre, character, form and time.

GENRE.

The genre of sesame street is obviously a children program, with educational aspects to it. It also has Sketch Comedy, Puppetry and Animation aspects.Educational television or learning show is the use of educational tools in the form of cartoons and animations. Children's programs like sesame street are educational, ranging from dedicated learning programs to those that indirectly teach the audience about topics such as the alphabet and counting. Some series are written to specific morals or objectives behind every episode often explained at the end by the characters that learnt the lesson. A sketch comedy is made up of short comedy scenes or episode, called 'sketches'. Such sketches are performed by a group of comic actors or comedians, either on stage or through a visual medium such as television. An individual comedy sketch is a brief scene or episode. It is now used widely in comedy and variety shows, talk shows and some children's television series, such as Sesame Street. Puppetry is a form of theatre or performance that involves the manipulation of puppets.puppetry in its most basic form is storytelling. It is believed to have originated 3000 BC. Puppetry has many forms but they share the same process of animating objects and making them perform. Puppetry is used in all societies across the world as entertainment, ceremonial rituals and celebrations such as carnivals. Animation is the process of creating motion and shape change, this is done by the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. Animators are artists who specialise in the creation of animation. Animations can be recorded on either  analogue or digital media. Sesame Street is a digital flash animation.

Reasons Why....

Questionnaire. (Primary Research)

I have chosen to carry out this form of research because, I want to find out what types of wildlife my target audience enjoys to watch or learn information about. I will have two questionnaires one for the age group of 16-24 and another the age group of 40-60. I want to know if my idea is commercially viable in today’s market. I will do this through asking questions about cost, interest in the subject matter, the shops that it is brought from. I also want to find out if my audience prefers to read a hard copy magazine or an electronic one; or if I should produce both. Another thing I want to find out is the actual layout of the magazine. This means if the audience likes more pictures, more words or a mixture of both. I want to find out what draws an audience to a wildlife magazine, this use of an open question will help me find out the codes and conventions of a wildlife magazine. And finally I want to find out whether or not I should include more double page stories or limit it to a single page. I can also use this method of research for idea 3 as I would want to find out what holiday destinations my audience would like to visit and have reviewed. I would also use this form of research for idea 4 as I need to know what types of music my target audience listens to then I can form the video around the particular music genre.

 Focus Groups (Primary Research)

I have also chosen to conduct a focus group, for this form of research I will have to consider the age range of the group- 17-30. Also whether to have the group primarily one gender, race or ethnicity or have a mix- the group will be a mix of gender, race and ethnicity. This is because I want to have a wide range of opinions and ideas, to be able to produce my idea to be attractive to potential buyers. I would have to consider who would lead the group, as to try not to influence the group’s opinion too much. I would also have to consider the amount of people, to be able for everyone to have their say about the idea. The amount of people that I am going to use for this form of research is going to be anywhere between 5-10 people. As I think this is a good amount for people to ask the right questions and voice their opinion. The last thing I would need to consider is closed and/or open questions. This is because I don’t want to the lead the group to a particular answer but I want to reach a useful conclusion. The content of these questions would similar to those from the questionnaire. I want to try and get a mix of personalities as I want different opinions.I could film the interview with permission of course this would make it easier to analyse at a later date. If I was to film the focus group I would have to have people sign a permission slip with a no objection section.

Interviews. (Primary Research)

For Idea 5 I have chosen to conduct a couple of Interviews(4) with students and teachers. For this from of research I will have to take in to consideration the age of the interviewees(3-6 and 25-40). This is because I want to know the opinions of both the teacher and the students. This is because this would primarily be the target audience for this idea. I also would have to chose gender, race or ethnicity and maybe social background. This way I tailor the program to meet the teaching needs and styles of the foundation stage teachers. The amount of questions for the interview is another thing I need to consider. As I don't want the interviewee to become bored or uninterested. I would have to ask a range of open and closed questions to get the balance of opinions and useful information that I could analyze. I could the interview with permission of course this would make it easier to analyze at a later date. If I was to fill the interview I would have to have people sign a permission slip with a no objection section.

Comparative Analysis.

For ideas 2 and 5 I have chosen to complete a comparative analysis to further back up my knowledge. I have also chosen this form of research because by comparing to existing products I can find the similarities and differences. This will also have an impact on my final design as I will find out what the codes and conventions of the genres are. I would have to take in to consideration things like the genre of the magazine and whether or not it is relevant to the chosen ideas. I would also have to access the time frame I would have to complete the comparative analysis.

Content Analysis.

For all of my ideas I have chosen to conduct content analysis of existing product. For this form of research I would have to take into consideration the depth of detail I want to go into as for each chosen product there are a million things to write about. I will also have to chose how many I would do for each idea. I would like to be able to complete at least three for each idea. This means that would get a thorough understanding of each genre and medium and what is expected of them.

Observation. (Primary Research)

For ideas 2, 4, and 5  I have chosen to complete an observation task. This is useful to me as I can analyze how my potential target market reacts to existing products. This would mean having to film reactions, then extracting the good aspects of the product and discarding the bad aspects. I would have to look into the legalities of filming others, no objection letters and the right to be anonymous in later right ups. I would have to consider a backup plan in case no body wanted to participate.

Content Analysis - Planet Cornwall- David Attenborough (SPOOF by Comedian Colin Leggo)

This Content Analysis is done on a spoof of David Attenborough's wildlife documentaries, however, it has been narrated by the comedian Colin Leggo. The Documentary is presented in the style of the BBC series Planet Earth. Leggo delivered an almost perfect impersonation of the Attenborough. Over the 5 minutes of the program the comedian takes the audience on a tour of the Cornwall describing how 'hatchlings' emerge from 'nests' (The Eden Project Dome) under the guidance of the Cornish 'elders'. He talks about the 'unknown dangers' that lie on the other side of the Tamar Bridge, He says in the exact same style of Attenborough 'The Cornish are taught by elders to fear whatever lies on the other side of this boundary'

LANGUAGE.

Cinematography- The documentary has a wide range of shots in the introduction such as: the Bird’s eye shot of the different countries that Attenborough has visited plus the satellite/Google earth view of planet earth. These true events give the impression of flying for the audience; it is also like the audience is actually travelling to the place that Leggo is narrating about. The fact that the audience doesn't actually see the comedian Colin Leggo gives the feeling that this is a real documentary as well as the feeling of detachment. This is because there is no one to form a relationship with and relate to. The shot as the beginning of the sequence are very isolated and empty, this point of view gives the impression of peace and innocence, and that these places are very naive to what happens in the rest of the planet. The establishing shot of the different countries shows the beauty and peacefulness of not being able to see the destruction of mankind. To start with these kinds of shot attract the audience to the program as they are clear and informative. The camera angles has a massive effect on how the audience receives the information they are being shown. The high camera angles throughout the first half of the sequence could reflect the high status of Attenborough as he has been knighted by the Queen; if this was a true BBC Planet Earth documentary it would be true. However, The shots are narrated by Colin Leggo so it shows the success of Leggo as he has managed to produce a pitch perfection impersonation of Attenborough. It could also show the wealth and power he still has. This is because it is unusual for an audience to see such a long term narrator or presenter. The point of view of the majority shot are from the sky or a bird’s view of the locations. This gives the effect that we as the audience are searching or following something. The shots are very steady throughout; this could reflect Leggo's steady climb to recognition due to this almost perfect copy. The framing of the shots is central and doesn't have a point of view. The shots are mostly in focus. The program has a wide range of professional and amateur shots. This is one of the many tells that the program is a spoof of an original.
Mise-en-scene- The setting of the program is mainly in Cornwall, England, however some of the shots are worldwide; including Africa, Australia and the Arctic. This shows that this program is a spoof from other wildlife programs that David Attenborough has narrated, as the shots of the different countries are actual places that have been narrated by Attenborough. The time period of the program is from July through to May.This is because it shows the holiday season with all the tourists on the beach as well as off season for the south of England. This means that the audience is more likely to see the locals of Cornwall, which adds to the humorous atmosphere of the program. The subjects in this documentary are symbols of tourists and locals. However the way that Leggo narrates in the documentary; the emotional response of the program is humour and factual as Leggo is comedian. However, even though there is factual elements to the program they are portrayed in a funny sarcastic way. This further highlights the fact that this is a comedic parody. In this documentary the characters are not acting in front of the camera so there is not a lot of facial expressions or body language shown. This is because there was no permissions to film a large number of peoples faces who weren't actors. Although the limited body language that was shown represents a relaxed and fun attitude, as you have person lying in the middle of the ocean to people sunbathing on the beach. There is also an active body language of the skate boarders and the free runners. In addition, there is a lonely feel to some of the body language such as the old man wondering the beach with a metal detector. Throughout the different shots there is the hustle and bustle of the town life and shopping centers. This shows that are conflicts on who the centre of attention and who the audience is actually supposed to be focused on. During the scene that starts at 3:27 the body language is confident and that of a leader. This further added to by the boy being on a platform or a raised stage with people crowding around watching what he has to say. Shortly after this scene there is a fight scene this is shown by aggressive behaviour; this is then juxtaposed by the innocence of the bystanders that are just watching the fight. The lighting throughout the documentary is natural as the shots are not filmed in a studio with proper lighting.

AUDIENCE.

The fact that this documentary is a spoof from the traditional David Attenborough wildlife programs, means that there is a wider target audience. This is because its not your typical wildlife/nature program as it is a comedy spoof, so could attract a younger audience as low as early twenties. I would place the demographic audience for this documentary between 22-60. This is because the age that is represented is from young children through to the elderly. However, I wouldn't target this program any younger then 18, because there isn't enough action to keep teenagers entertained. As the documentary is produced by Colin Leggo and his You Tube channel there would be no harm in younger children watching this. However, they might not understand all of the jokes and references. It also appeals to both genders, as there is nothing really to suggest that it appeals to one specific gender; apart from the fact that the narrator is male. It is also because even though there isn't a script for the characters as such, the stories that are portrayed represent both the struggles and successes of both male and female. The psychographic audience for this program is The Explorer, this is because idea comes from David Attenborough programs are all about exploring different countries and the animals in that live there. This program could also appeal to The Mainstream audience because the program shows the stories of everyday normal people, with no forced emotions. The audience readings is a dominant reading because the audience understands and agrees with the producers intended meaning. The audience theory that Planet Cornwall meets is the uses and gratification model. This program conforms to this theory because it relates to the four sub headings: diversion, personal relationship, personal identity and surveillance. This is because people conform to the normality and reality of Planet Cornwall, the audience will be attracted to watch this as they can relate to the stories of the characters. The personal relationship and personal identity relate very well to this program because, the characters that are portrayed in the program are normal people going about their normal everyday business. This would encourage both men and women to watch it as a relationship is formed with the idea of David Attenborough who is actually Colin Leggo. Surveillance is letting the audience know about the different aspects of the south of England; and the different countries that David Attenborough has been to and narrated for.

VALUES AND IDEOLOGY.

The messages that the producer of Planet Cornwall are trying to convey to the audience are, that it is good to be different, this is because this documentary is really different from Attenborough's usual programs as it has a spoof nature. Another message is through The program has iconic items throughout such as an ice cream van and crowded beaches with beaching combing people. There is also cliff jumping and surfing, which are typical water activities on the south coast of England.Planet Cornwall is a traditional British program. This is because it is filmed in Britain and by a British director; the narrator is British and the actors or people being filmed are British.

REPRESENTATION.

The representations of Britain through the objects that are placed in the back ground of shots are very clever. This is because it represents true British activities. The age that is being represented in this episode is a wide range as it shows children running around on the beach to older people wandering around with a metal detector. This is the same with gender because both male and females are represented in a stereotypical way. The race and ethnicity that is being represented in the program are a large majority British or European. The financial status and jobs of the people represented are families and jobs that allowed at least a two week summer holiday. The financial status is middle and working class as they don’t have the money to travel to other country, with potentially nicer beaches. The object that is being represented in Planet Cornwall is holiday goers to the south of England and the Cornish people or locals. The preferred audience for this representation is a British audience as the facts that are used aren’t a hundred percent true as they have humour and sarcasm mixed in. I don’t think this would appeal to a foreign audience as they wouldn’t understand the format of the documentary. The people in planet Cornwall are going about their daily life with Colin Leggo narrating. The activities are typical such as Cornish pasties and beach combing. They are conforming to genre expectation for example in Attenborough’s other programs there is usually a fight between the males and day to day business. This episode conforms the natural codes and conventions of a nature program. Apart from there are no animals involved. These people are present in the documentary because in all of Attenborough productions he tries to film animals in their preferred or natural habitat, the exact same is happening in this episode just with humans in Cornwall. This is the comedic spoof nature. The purpose that they serve is to give insight into life in Cornwall as a tourist and as a local and the rivalry with Plymouth. The communication that the audience receives about their presence is that they are oblivious to what is going on around them and happiness about the traditions and activities that they participate in. They subjects of the program are framed in a high frame and in bird eye shots establishing shots. There are also mid shots and two shots of a few people. They are represented in a natural way; to an audience the situation doesn’t seem forced or fake in any way. This is shown through the quality of shots. The surrounding items and objects are things like beach and ocean scenes, objects that compliment these such as surfboards, buckets and yachts.

INSTITUTION.

David Attenborough documentaries and wildlife program are usually broadcasted by the BBC. However, this documentary spoof is produced by Colin Leggo and his You Tube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/ColinLeggo).

YouTube, LLC was bought by Google for US$1.65 billion in November 2006 and now operates as a Google subsidiary.

NARRATIVE.

There are many narratives in this short opening sequence such as binary opposites. Binary opposites mean the relationship between two opposite words, pictures and objects. This opening sequence has establishing shots of different countries and climates; as Leggo narrates about the different countries and places those shots are shown. For example one establishing shot is of mountains with lakes and rivers, however, the shot then changes to a green swamp or mangrove. Another example of a binary opposite pairs would be the shot of snow topped mountains in Africa to the reefs Australia the last pairs of the opening sequence is the ice desert of the Arctic to the beaches of Cornwall.

GENRE.

The Genre of this documentary is obvious to the audience or anyone who would know the reputation that David Attenborough has built over the years of his career. However, there is an element of comedy and humour. This is because it is comedic spoof narrated by Colin Leggo. Leggo is using the same codes and conventions that Attenborough does as he is observing people living in Cornwall as if they are animals.  This shows that the producer is trying to reach out to a wider audience other than just the nature enthusiasts.

Content analysis- National Geographic-Traveller

LANGUAGE.

The main image is a close up shot of a young woman. This shows that it appeals to young travelling women; she is also an attractive person who attracts men as well, and looks around the age of travelling people. The way she is hiding her face suggests mystery and reflects the title of something being hidden. E.g. Hawaii being a secret paradise. The mast head follows the simple code and conventions of regular magazines, with the text located at the top of the page with it spreading out across the width of the page. The way the image is behind the masthead says to the audience that the traveler edition of the national geographic franchise is not that recognizable or well known; this also adds to the illusion of hidden Hawaii. The colour of the masthead is white this could be because that it is associated with light, goodness and innocence, this is contrast with the dark hair of the young woman connotes elegance and mystery. This image is a posed image instead of a candid image, this is a direct mode of address to the reader, and it is a positive thing as the audience feels intrigued by the hidden aspect. The use of the yellow flowers in her hair coincides with the colour of the national geographic logo. This could be used because yellow is a symbol of sunshine, it is associated with joy and happiness. The yellow flowers in her hair are similar to that of the welcoming Lei flower necklaces. The thick yellow boarder represents the national geographic logo; it could also represent a picture frame as to give recognition or credit to the photographer. The colour scheme: Yellow, Green, Orange and White; this connotes a spring theme. It could also give the impression that the best time to visit Hawaii is in the spring. These colours also give the audience a calming feel, as the colours aren’t harsh and in the readers face, they are more soft pastel colours. The colour green is the colour of peace and nature; it symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness and fertility. This could connote the impression of the health benefits of Hawaii, as all the stresses of the real world are lifted as you rejuvenate in Hawaii. The inclusion of orange for one of article headings; combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. This gives the representation of enthusiasm, fascination, creativity encouragement and stimulation. The combination of the article title and the colour orange shows harmony. The anchorage text gives the audience an insight into the image and inside stories. This offers the audience an incentive to read the rest of the magazine. This use of structure to the front cover gives the audience a sort of guide for reading the whole magazine in an order to receive all the information. The layout of the magazine front cover meets the codes and conventions of a magazine. The sell-lines on the cover of the magazine are used to attract people to buy this magazine. The use of the title ‘4 great literary cities’ with the contrast of ‘Los Angeles with kids’ gives this magazine a wider audience. The front used is bold for the main stories and it stand out against the merged colour background. The use of different font sizes shows the importance of particular stories. The language used such as the adjectives make the sell lines better as they make the appeal of the magazine more interesting.

AUDIENCE.

The wide range of travel destinations means that the magazine appeals to a wider audience; such as families. This is because there is an article advertised on the front for travelling to Los Angeles (LA) with kids. This is also achieved by having the website link for the online version; this shows that the magazine is available for an audience that prefers to use technology. The demographic audience is late teenagers through to mid to late thirties. This is because of the prime age of travelling is university gap years and the audience may not have the responsibility of a job, house or a family to restrict them. National geographic also caters to a more family orientated unit as there are articles for safe travel for children. The psychographic audience is definitely the Aspirer and the Explorer and maybe the Succeeder. This is because, the editor is reaching towards the people who live outside the stereotypical comfort bubble, and want to explore the hidden aspects of countries and places that are off the beaten/tourist tracks so to speak. The audience theory that the magazine meets is the uses and gratification model. This magazine conforms to this theory because it relates to the four sub headings: diversion, personal relationship, personal identity and surveillance. Because so many people conform to the tranquility of a beach paradise and Hawaii, the audience will be attracted to buy the magazine as a means of escape and a cheap holiday. The personal relationship and personal identity relate very well to this magazine because, the main image is of a young attractive woman. This would encourage both men and women to buy the magazine as a relationship is formed just on the looks of the model. This is because in today’s society people are judged purely on looks alone. The subheadings on the front cover relate well to the traveler edition of the national geographic franchise because of the sell line the audience knows what the magazine is going to be about. Surveillance is letting the audience know about different travel destinations around the world, and the highlights of those countries. The sell lines make the magazine appealing to a wider audience because it is giving them information on what’s inside the magazine. The audience reading for this magazine is a dominant one, because the audience understand the morals and messages and agree with them.

VALUES AND IDEOLOGY.

The messages that the editor of National Geographic Traveller Magazine is trying to convey to the audience are, that it is important to go travelling with your children, but to do it safety and to be well informed. This shows the importance of family values. The front cover gives a juxtaposed messaged as it is just a young women. the message that it received by the audience is that women can and should be independent when travelling. On the other hand, because the women is facing down with her face not in focus it could give the opposing message women being too shy to travel. Another message that the front cover conveys to an audience is that to never forget the places you have been to, and not to leave places out. This is done through one of the articles that references the forgotten towns and cities of Italy. In addition, a important message that the front cover forwards on to the audience is that even last minute trips to places is okay to do, and can be completed. The final message that the National Geographic Traveller magazine conveys to the audience is that every day is a new day that holds a new adventure. This shown through the story title 'Egypt's New Day'.

REPRESENTATION.

The process of which this magazine represents the real world is through the genre of the magazine. This is because the audience is attracted to what the magazine stands for. The people that are being represented in this magazine are young people, who enjoy indulging themselves and splashing out on nice exotic holidays. It represents students who are travelling and exploring the world in a gap year. The preferred audience for this representation is primarily men as the model on the front cover is an attractive young women, it also represents women as she doesn’t have lots of makeup and hasn’t been surgically ‘fixed’. In the picture the model is looking down and hiding her face. This activity is not typical and is posed to a certain degree. I believe that the model and the layout conforms to the expectations and conventions of the travel genre.
In this instance the model represents the typical travelling age. It also represents Hawaii through the front cover, this is because it gives the audience a calming feeling and there isn’t a lot going on. This represents the more remote places of Hawaii, as if you wanted a relaxing holiday in paradise you wouldn’t go to the main busy cities. This is because like most countries Hawaii’s capital is busy and crowded.

INSITUTIONS.

The barcode is placed in the bottom right hand corner as not to distract the reader from the main image and story. This is also a convention of magazines. National geographic Magazine is the official magazine of the National Geographic society, which is composed of a hard copy magazine, online magazine, an informative website, YouTube and TV channel, Facebook page, travel tours and guided trips. All of these aspects primarily contain articles or information about geography, history and world culture. The magazine in particular is known for its thick square-bound glossy format with a yellow rectangular boarder and its extensive use of dramatic photography. The magazine was formerly known as ‘The National Geographic Magazine’ however, was shortened to ‘National Geographic’. It has been published monthly, continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the society itself was founded. The magazine has an additional map supplements that are also included with subscriptions. These supplements are available through the traditional printed editions and through the interactive online version. Occasionally special editions are published.

NARRITIVE.

For this magazine cover I have chosen, the theory of binary opposites by Levi-Strauss, The story of this magazine is shown through the main image on the front cover. This is because the young woman shows a narrative of an audience that enjoys travelling to hidden paradises. The narrative is driven forward by the placement of the model, as her face is hidden, the effect of this is that the audience is intrigued and wants to find out more.

GENRE.

The typical genre of a National Geographic magazine is history, geographic and world culture. However, they have magazines such as this one that are just focused one topic or genre. This particular magazine has the genre of a travelling magazine. This means that the articles on the inside will be about different countries, which the target audience can travel to.
